Foldable phones: should you wait?

Big screens in your pocket, with a few things to check first.

Updated 10 October 2026

Foldables turn a phone into a small tablet. Samsung already sells them, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7, and Apple's first foldable was reported to be arriving alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, with talk of a price around US$2,000.

The good: a big screen that fits in your pocket. The risks: high prices, a visible crease on some models, more fragile screens and expensive repairs. Battery life can also be shorter than on a regular phone.

If you are curious, wait for independent reviews, ask what a screen repair costs, and try the hinge in a shop before you buy.
