How to choose a fibre provider in South Africa

Same cables, different service. Here is how to pick.

Updated 10 October 2026

South African fibre is open access. Companies like Openserve, Vumatel and Frogfoot own the lines in the ground, and internet providers (ISPs) sell you a package on top of them.

Start by checking which networks reach your address, then compare ISPs on that same network. Look at the monthly price, free installation and router, upload speed, and whether the contract is month-to-month.

Service matters as much as speed. Afrihost is reported to have won MyBroadband's ISP of the Year award for 2026, but read recent reviews for the ISP and network in your area. The market is also changing, with Vodacom taking a stake in Maziv, the company behind Vumatel.
