Wi-Fi 7 explained: do you need it?
The newest Wi-Fi is fast, but your internet line may be the limit.
Updated 10 October 2026
Wi-Fi 7 (also called 802.11be) is the newest Wi-Fi standard. It uses wider channels and can connect a device over more than one band at once, which helps speed and stability when many devices are online.
You need both a Wi-Fi 7 router and a Wi-Fi 7 phone or laptop to see the benefit. Ookla data cited by FastestFibre puts South Africa's median fixed download at about 50 Mbps in May 2026, so for many homes the fibre line is the limit, not the Wi-Fi.
